Arguineguín | Gran Canaria

Sunwing hotel in Arguineguín, Gran Canaria. / Sunwing-hotelli, Arguineguín, Gran Canaria.

I was in Gran Canaria for a week in the beginning of May. We were staying in Arguineguín in the south of Gran Canaria, but also visited Las Palmas, Palmitos Park in Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán. I'll divide each of those places into their own posts. We also wanted to go hiking, for example in Roque Nublo area and on the sand dunes in Maspalomas, but this trip didn't go exactly as planned...

Olin toukokuun alussa viikon matkalla Gran Canarialla.

First of all, since our trip was so late in the spring, the travel agency didn't offer organized hiking trips anymore. Now the best way to get to the hiking routes in the middle of the island is to rent a car, but neither me nor my mother, who I was traveling with, wanted to drive those narrow, crooked, mountain roads. The bus connections in Gran Canaria are quite good -- except to these hiking routes. So we gave up on that hiking plan.

The next problem was that I spent some of the already short vacation being ill. I've traveled to Egypt 4 times but I've never been as sick on a trip as I was in Gran Canaria. So we spent one day mostly inside (except for a walk to the pharmacy) and after that I was ok in the mornings but still felt ill and tired towards the afternoon and evening. After the trip it turned out it wasn't just any stomach flu, but something else on top of that. 24 hours after I got home, I got chickenpox which explained the nausea and tiredness for a week before that. And I can tell you that having chickenpox as and adult is not fun. But that's a different story. The point is we had to cut out some of the program we had planned for the trip.

On to Arguineguín. We stayed at the Sunwing hotel. The best part of the hotel was probably the exercise classes and possibilities it offers: zumba, core, water aerobics in the pool outside... Well, those were the only ones I managed to try out before I got sick on the third evening. We paid for breakfast at the hotel (in advance), but otherwise bought our food at the grocery store (there's a Spar in walking distance from Sunwing) and cooked it in the room. And frankly, the breakfast at the hotel cost more than all our other meals so it probably wasn't worth it. There's no beach exactly where the hotel is but there are beaches when you walk in either direction. The nicest one is Anfi, which has white sand.

As for shopping, we visited the Tuesday market, which was almost identical to the Friday market in Puerto de Mogán. We didn't spend much time for shopping (other than for food) on the trip, but one surprising shop in Arguineguín was Happy Shopping that sold just about everything. Clothes, crafts supplies, stationary, make-up, hardware, home decor... I'll show the few things I bought in a separate post.

Nyt Arguineguíniin. Hotellimme oli Sunwing, jonka parhaita puolia olivat varmaan ilmaiset liikuntamahdollisuudet: zumba, core, vesijumppa ulkoaltaassa... No, siinä olivatkin ne joita ehdin kokeilla ennen sairastumista.

About public transport in Gran Canaria. It's easy to move between the cities by bus. You can find the schedules and prices in Glubalsu.net. The bus numbers and prices might or might not be correct, though. The bus we took to Puerto de Mogán was in time and cost 2.20 euros per person as it was supposed to. The bus to Palmitos Park was 3.60 euros instead of the 2.95 it was supposed to be. And the bus that was supposed to go to Las Palmas didn't take any passengers, but a different bus (not mentioned even in the bus stop schedule and so full I had to stand till we got to the airport) did some minutes later. The price was still 6.80 euros as mentioned online.

I was very careful through most of the trip to not get sunburn. Until the last day that is. The flight was in the evening but we had to leave our suitcases in the morning and check out of the room by noon. Because of the "no liquids on flight" rule, I was thinking should I keep the sunscreen with me for the day and then just leave it behind or pack it in the suitcase in the morning. ...I was stupid enough to pack it in the suitcase. Do I even need to say I got badly sunburn during the day (even though I was in the shade all the time unless I was swimming in the pool)? The night flight home was pretty painful. All the aloe vera creams (that would be good for calming sunburn skin) we bought were obviously in the suitcases as well.

Finally here's a 7 min video of the places we visited in Gran Canaria.

Maratonpostauksen lopuksi vielä (7 min) videokooste Gran Canarian maisemista.

  1. I hope you still enjoyed your trip a little.

But what intrigues me is... is it allowed to cook in the room of the hotel? It had never occurred to me!

    1. Yeah, there was a little kitchen with a stove in the room so it was fine.

And yes, I did still enjoy the trip. :)
