Vanessa | Insect Inspired Acrylic Portrait Painting

I made an acrylic portrait painting on canvas inspired by insect hotels and Leilani Joy's art. I spent a long time searching for a name for her and finally decided on Vanessa, because it's a butterfly genus. The background is honeycomb patterned and the girl is wearing cones, insects and a mini insect hotel as jewellery. I usually leave the background for last but this time I did the background first and transferred my sketch of the girl onto the canvas using graphite transfer paper (which is so much better than baking paper that I used before) and painted over that. I used gold paint for the background patterns and some details. The reference photo for the pose is my own (but this is not a self-portrait). I made a video of the process, if you want to see this painting come to life. I often listen to an audio book or music while I paint. This one was made while listening to Stieg Larsson's book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Maalasin akryyliväreillä kankaalle muotokuvan, jonka inspiraationa olivat hyönteishotellit ja Leilani Joy:n maalaukset. Mietin sopivaa nimeä pitkään ja päädyin Vanessaan, koska se on erään perhossuvun nimi. Tausta esittää mehiläiskennoa ja tytöllä on koruina käpyjä, hyönteisiä ja minikokoinen hyönteishotelli. Yleensä jätän taustan viimeiseksi, mutta tällä kertaa maalasin taustan ensimmäiseksi ja siirsin sitten ääriviivapiirustuksen taustan päälle käyttämällä grafiittipaperia (toimii paljon paremmin kuin leivinpaperi) ja maalasin piirustuksen päälle. Käytin taustan kuvioihin ja joihinkin yksityiskohtiin kultamaalia. Käytin asennon mallina omaa kuvaani (mutta en maalannut omakuvaa). Tallensin maalausprosessin myös videolle. Kuuntelen usein maalatessani äänikirjoja tai musiikkia. Tämän maalauksen taustalla kuuntelin Stieg Larssonin kirjaa Miehet jotka vihaavat naisia.

How to Transfer Sketch onto Painting Surface

As I've mentioned before, I don't usually draw my sketches for paintings straight onto watercolor paper or canvas. I draw the sketch on a separate paper, where it's easier to erase and clean up the outlines and then transfer the finished sketch onto my painting surface. How to Save Leftover Acrylic Paint for Later

A quick tip on how to save acrylic paint for later! If you mix too much acrylic paint or pour too much paint out of the tube, do you know what to do with the leftover paint? If you're planning to continue painting the next day, you can't just leave it, cause acrylic paint will dry by then.
